Your business roadmap will be highly influenced by the information you have or are exposed to, your skillsets, your network – as cliche as it may sound and your effort.
The effort is where it’s at. You’ll eventually succeed if you give your all to make this work.
So, what about it?
If you follow us on Instagram, @olive_nkirote, you might have seen my stories where I shared this briefly, but because stories only last 24 hours, you probably didn’t catch it, so here is a summary of this roadmap.

Step 1
Finding the right product to sell is critical. You can source inspiration from events around you – cue Joanne’s testimony.
I began with nursing mum items and body care products (still ongoing) until one day, a colleague saw me in the office with a tumbler they’d never seen before anywhere and said people would buy it—an ONR student TESTIMONY ft: Joanne, founder of @quench254 #ONRAlumni email.
We know this is important, so we focused on this topic in the ONR Alibaba Masterclass, from slides 7 to 14 – 5-step product guidance process.

And we didn’t stop there! We also added a ‘Business tips’ section highlighting the process of pricing different types of products.
These include products you can risk and sell, products you shouldn’t sell, products you should 50:50 sell or not sell, and finally, products you can sell.

I hope this shows you the importance of this step. We don’t want you to have dead stock of items you just imported, so don’t rush this process.
To see Jumia’s popular products, visit the website, head to the search bar and look for a specific product.
Look at the number of sellers selling the item and pay attention to the ‘verified ratings.‘ Those are the number of people who have purchased that item from Jumia. That should tell you there’s a possible demand for it.
Below are some items I found in the Kitchen & Dining Products section on Jumia. (Verified ratings ranging from 88 – 640)
Consider this information knowledge. It could tell you a variety of things. i.e
- The most purchased items on Jumia are in the kitchen section.
- The price point of these items or the price customers are willing to pay depends on whether they’re generic or branded.
- Your possible competition in the space.
Exposing yourself to such metrics can be very enlightening.
Step 2

Pricing is essential because it affects the profits you make from selling your goods.
How you spend at this stage affects the total costs you incur in acquiring those items, how you price your goods, how much revenue you make, and your take-home profits.

You’ll have a seamless importing experience; you will not believe it!

Remember, don’t crucify yourself as you start your importing journey. It’s not worth it!
You’d rather invest in the knowledge and have a seamless experience than not invest at all, partake in guesswork, and spend twice as much correcting errors that could have been avoided—all from making one decision—saving you time and money!
As you may know by now, I love a good quote, but today, I want to leave you with a line from 1 of the books I am currently reading. It says:
