Trading 101
Welcome to the Unorthodox Financial Series: Part 2: Trading 101
Trading, trading, trading… where do I start?
Trading is the most humbling, most eye opening and most challenging skill I’ve ever had to learn in my 30 years of life. (And I’m not exaggerating!)
Learning trading is understanding financial markets in a way you’ve never experienced them before.
It’s realizing that the world is playing chess while the rest of us play checkers.
Financial markets have exposed me to a very different way of thinking, mostly because you start to understand how hedge funds, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, central banks and market makers participate in the markets and move huge amounts of capital for completely different reasons.
Some are looking for returns, some are managing risk, some are protecting long term wealth, some are implementing monetary policy, and others are providing liquidity to the market. (Cue Fundamental analysis)
It now starts to make sense why Wall Street exists, why trillions move through these markets, and all those movies you’ve watched, like The Big Short.
That’s what trading did for me.
What do you mean that, using technical analysis, fundamental analysis and self mastery, you can develop a view on where the markets are likely to move in the short term and potentially make money from those moves, all from the comfort of your home? (Now, this does not mean you can predict the market with certainty. It means learning how to read information, form a probability-based view, and manage your risk when you are wrong.)
And that what I am doing, companies and institutions are also doing on a daily basis, managing and moving capital to try and increase the value of their assets or generate returns for themselves and their clients.
Now, not to say this is easy. It’s far from being easy.
I mean, your competition includes highly sophisticated institutions, algorithms and high frequency trading firms. But this skill has the potential to change one’s life.
So, welcome to Trading 101, a course I created after taking a one-year sabbatical from building my business to instead take on trading and eventually work towards becoming a profitable trader.
This course was created to demystify the common myths and misconceptions that plague this space. I explain, in common language, what to expect in this world, the common financial instruments, the different financial derivatives, and a six-month roadmap you can use to get started with this journey.
Well, this class is a great starting point for beginners who know nothing, because I was that beginner too.
I hope this class helps you develop interest in the space and join us in the trading community to share your trading journey with us.
It doesn’t matter if today is Day 1. We want to hear that too.
Welcome to Trading 101.
