Let’s talk about the Price Difference.
You might know by now that I run a farm business. Doing this business has thrown me to hellfire, but that’s a story for another day. My rabbit farm is YRK Organic, and feeds are one of our vast expenses.
For any farm that does animal husbandry, 1 of their main expenses is the cost of feeds to fatten the animal organically to facilitate sales at a good weight.
Now, sometime back in 2021, we increased our rabbit numbers to almost 1,000, and let me tell you, I almost died. Those tiny monsters ate and ate and ate nonstop. They didn’t even allow my pockets to breathe.
Our profit margins were significantly reduced because the money we made went to purchasing ‘rabbit pellets.’ A grain-like seed that is jam-packed with protein ingredients and assists the rabbit in gaining weight organically. Ps. Rabbits are obsessed with it.
I knew I needed to invest in a pellet machine and manufacture the rabbit pellets ourselves. Also, the price of feeds was going up each year, which meant the expense kept worsening. I visited my trusted OLX website, now known as Jiji, to find the Buying price of this machine in the local market.

I remember seeing the price and wondering how long it would take me to save this amount to purchase this machine that I urgently needed to increase the number of rabbits, which would, in turn, increase sales. But, thanks to the ONR Alibaba Masterclass:

- I knew how to vet the supplier to ensure they were producing good quality machines and that they could be trusted.
- I knew the best shipping company to bring the machine to me in Kenya at the BEST price!
So, I went to Alibaba and started my search, and lo and behold, there it was: A brand-new Pellet machine for only USD 200. (Conversion based on the current USD to KES rate. Assuming 143/= per dollar, that was Ksh. 28,600/=)
A conversation with the supplier after researching and sourcing the best in the industry.
For packaging, shipping and delivery of the machine to my shipping agent, I was charged a total of USD 40 (Kshs. 5720/=) Total buying price of the machine directly from China was USD 240, equivalent to Ksh. 34,320/=
After paying for the machine, I had to wait for the items to be shipped from China to Kenya. A quick tip: Always ship via sea as it’s more affordable, especially for heavy-weight goods.
Also, if you are not in a rush to acquire the goods, choose sea freight. It takes 3-5 weeks but is significantly cheaper than air freight. The pellet machine was 91 kgs, including the wooden casing. This would have been too expensive for air shipping.

Fast-forward to the past week, I received a message from my shipping agent that my machine had arrived. It was time to pay and pick it up. I had 2 packages in transit. The receipt below shows the price for both; however, for the machine only, the shipping fee was about Ksh. 17,820/=
With all the numbers crunched up, how much did we spend importing the pellet machine on our own?
Buying price – Ksh. 34,320/=
Shipping fee price – Ksh. 17,820/=
Total spent – Ksh. 52,140/=
That means we saved a whooping Kshs. 127,400 – 52,140 = Kshs. 75,260/= by investing ourselves directly from Alibaba in China. Do you see the power of knowledge? The power of acquiring a scalable and monetisable skill?
