My Personal Alibaba TESTIMONIAL & STORY ft Olive Nkirote

Have I ever shared my testimony with you before? My raw, candid experience with Alibaba? I don’t think so.

It’s time to lay it all bare. Enjoy!

If you missed our last blog post, check it out in the Blog section; you’ll find it. This is a continuation of that email, titled – Friend, Welcome to ONR! Your Business Bestie (Allow us to re-introduce ourselves!)

Let’s continue where we left off. Farming!

I have imported everything from clothes to machinery, all from the comfort of my desk – Olive Nkirote. (You’ll see it in a bit!)

We started our farming venture with my partner ‘B’ back in 2019. He loves animals and farming, so he roped me into his dream, and Yummy Rabbits Kenya was born early that year.

We get this question a lot. Why rabbit farming?

If things went our way, it could have been Yummy Pork Kenya instead, but things didn’t align for us to keep pigs.

They needed a sizable piece of land and are often known to bear an overwhelming scent, especially in large numbers, which our small piece of land, in a residential area, couldn’t suffice.

Given our resources and location, only a small animal was feasible. Small animals included birds like chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc., but we didn’t feel ‘led‘ to keep birds.

One day, my B and I commenced our research and lo and behold, we unearthed the mighty RABBIT. Mighty because this animal sounded too good to be true.

Nothing goes to waste with rabbits. Did you know this? We didn’t know this prior!

Their meat is a nutritious delicacy, certified by the USDA as the healthiest meat in the world. Their poop is a treasure for farmers, providing organic fertiliser and pesticides for plants.

And their fur? It can be fashioned into many items, from footwear to outerwear like fur coats.

My B and I looked at each other and knew this was a gold mine. We, therefore, began our journey!

No sooner had we done much than COVID-19 hit in 2020. We had purchased 1 cage set from a farmer from Jiji, set it up, and started our journey inside an old chicken shed at the back of my parent’s house.

I could write a book highlighting the ups and downs we had setting up and running this business (that we still face to date), but I’ll spare you my business traumas and cue the star of the show – Alibaba, and why understanding this platform saved us from shutting down.

They say that sometimes you can do so much research, but you’ll only know the truth when you are on the ground – Kwa ground, vitu ni different!

Now, there 3 ways to make more money in a business:

  1. Get more customers to buy your products.
  2. Increase your average purchasing value, i.e, the price of the sold item.
  3. Get your customers to buy more times.

With this in mind, we knew 1 cage wouldn’t make us rich. Rich is an overreach. One cage would only make us a little money, maybe just enough to sustain operations, and that wouldn’t be enough to support us.

We set out to purchase more cages.

More cages + more rabbits = more meat to sell = more money to make.

Locally produced cages were bulky, costly, not cleaner friendly, needed a lot of maintenance and were not appealing to the eye.

But wait? I had learnt how to Import from China that same year – the failed bags business, remember? – Why not utilise that experience, knowledge and technical know-how in this farming co-venture with B and see how it goes?

Fast-forward to 2021 and 2022, we took it upon ourselves to invest in the farm.

We imported galvanised steel rabbit cages, feeding pots, drinkers, floor mats, and nesting boxes – everything we needed to run the internal operations of the farm efficiently.

Here is an example of the difference between locally available and imported drinkers.

Such a notable difference, right?

We moved from a small, old chicken shed to a new concrete-stoned building filled with lovely rabbit cages from none other than Alibaba – China.

Here is a sneak peek picture of the farm with everything fitted. Everything pictured is from China except the animals.

(Ps. We don’t do farm visits.)

When I say Alibaba saved us, I mean it.

Not only was it more affordable to import, but also, the cages were very durable, needed little to no maintenance, were visually appealing and were easy to set up and move around in case we needed to relocate the farm.

This is my personal Alibaba testimony.

  • I didn’t need to go to China.
  • I didn’t need to send someone on my behalf to China to buy the necessary items at the farm for me.
  • I didn’t need to purchase a vendor list.
  • I didn’t need to join an Importing group to pay someone a commission to source and make the shipment for me.

What I did instead:

  • I invested hours trying to understand and master the Alibaba platform.
  • I spent time perfecting my sourcing process for high-quality suppliers and goods on Alibaba.
  • I dedicated time to researching the best shipping agents to use in Kenya.
  • I devoted hours polishing my Alibaba Importing process, all from the comfort of my home.

2.5 years later, I am here, looking to share my processes, tips, knowledge, and experience with you to replicate for yourself and successfully import for your business in half the time.

Not half the time *correction*, a short time. 6-hours is all you need to know, everything I’ve learned in the last 2.5 years.

So, what exactly is ONR offering you?

If you have been meaning to start a side hustle or new business venture by importing low-priced products from China and selling them here in Kenya at a profit, then this is for you.

In the last 2.5 years, I have imported everything from clothes to machinery, all from the comfort of my desk, and nothing I have ever imported from China has ever been lousy quality or sub-par quality for me.

Here is a picture of a machine I recently imported for the farm and a set of gym clothes I got, all from Alibaba.
